It is important to get lived experience influence in as early as possible and being part of the research agenda is a key part of this. I was invited to join the School of Nursing as an Honorary Lecturer to both lead research and help the school bring more and better lived experience into their research program. I was invited to join the Advisory Committee to the Medical and Health Sciences Faculty helping to guide mental health and addictions development.
Myself and my colleague Debra Lampshire, who was bringing lived experience expertise in university teaching, devised the first Services User Academia Symposium to help academics understand lived experience. It is now one of the preeminent gatherings of it's kind in New Zealand and Australia with international recognition.
